You get six

With the race for regional council seats heating up in St. Catharines, an important bit of information you need is:

You get six.

In St. Catharines, voters face quite a lengthy ballot when they vote for: 1 mayor, 2 city councillors in their specific ward, 1 regional chair, 6 regional councillors to represent all of St. Catharines, and their school board trustees (the number of which varies depending on which school board you’re registered to vote for).

At the time of writing this post, the regional council candidate list looks like this:

That’s currently five people running for six seats, but we know that there will be quite a lengthy list of candidates to represent the people of St. Catharines on Regional Council before the July 27 nomination deadline. There will likely be 18 or more candidates.

The point of this post, though, is to inform or remind voters that you don’t have to choose between one candidate and another, if that’s the decision you’re struggling with. Rather, you are permitted to vote for up to six of us. My hope is that there will be at least six people running that you know you can trust to speak on your behalf; that you know will represent your best interests; that you know will be cognizant of what it means to spend taxpayer money responsibly; that you know will work hard to make Niagara a great place to live and work.

That said, you are not obligated to vote for six people. If there are only four of us or only three of us or only one of us that you feel best represent your concerns and interests, then only vote for four or three or one.

Either way, I hope that if you have any questions or concerns, or if you’d like to share some thoughts on the state of regional politics that you’ll reach out to me here, through my Facebook page, through Twitter, or via e-mail.

  1. I had a survey call last night about voting for Caslin and one other who I’ve never heard of. Do you know who it might be?

    • You’re the second person who’s told me this today. If you’re asking who the other candidate is right now, Damian Goulbourne and John (Ringo) Beam have both filed. I imagine any survey asking about Caslin would be asking about Goulbourne, though.
